Stents are plastic or metal tubes most commonly inserted into arteries to hold them open and ease congestion. It works by discharging a jolt of electricity into the patient’s heart to depolarize a large amount of heart muscle and end the dysrhythmia, allowing the patient’s heart to beat normally again. It can be used to listen to blood flow, intestines, lungs, and many other things! Defibrillatorĭefibrillators are used to resuscitate patients when their heart stops or they experience life-threatening cardiac dysrhythmias.
